Dresser finished

I haven't wanted to do ANY painting sense I finished Ella's dressers a few months ago. It takes so long, it's very messy, it's so hot in Florida and I have a one year old!

But this little beauty was such an eyesore in my living room.

I'm sure you saw many picture were it was lurking in the background and you wondered why I would keep something like that in my living room.....for six months!

We got them all from Jame's parents (thanx). Ella's three dressers were in great shape, but this one was not, to say the least. A little stinker had taken permanent marker and colored all over it. There was lots of crayon too, which is very hard to paint over. There were also some stickers that needed to be scratched off. FUN
I was dreading painting behind the doors and over this lovely handwritten poem.

But it finally got done, and in just two days! I sanded, had a heck of a time getting the doors off, added three coats of primer and four coats of brown paint that matches the couch quite well. Also added a coat of polycrylick to protect the paint from my monster baby!

I used an old salad dressing bottle, wrapped a little twine around it and filled it with sticks Ella and I find on our walks for a little decoration.
I would do a coat in the morning during nap time and then head back out to the porch when Elle would go to bed at 7:00 and painted the next coat in the moonlight. Then I would see all the mistakes I made the next morning in the sunlight.
It turned out ok. I added new silver handles and some wicker toy baskets. Now I just need to paint the chair and we should be done painting for awhile

I hated every minute of this makeover....but we saved some $$$ doing it ourselves instead of buying a new one. Total cost for paint was $10 bucks. I shouldn't say "we" because James didn't help for one second. Not even to drag it outside. He thinks he is so busy trying to become a Doctor or something?????
It was also a few days before he noticed it was even painted and back in the house. Not sure he even knew it had left the house?? He loved the way it turned out though and that makes me happy :)

  5. I want to come see your house. I love both of your paint projects. I have painted a few pieces of craigslist furniture since we've been here. Such is the life of a med students wife right? P.S. Where did you get the baskets? I need a few but don't want to spend much. And I love the artwork above Ella's dressers. Where is that from?

  6. McKenzie- you should come over! Ella would LOVE to play with Makay. She loves older men. I got the baskets at Target. They are so sturdy and will last a long time. The artwork in Ella's room was a calender my mom used to keep track of optimal times to get pregnant :) from 1971. It also has how much she made each week babysitting, how much she spent on groceries and how much my Dad was making when they first got married. I think she was 21? It is like a journal to me. I found it in the garage when I was 13 and loved the artwork and knew it would go in my babies room one day.

  8. I love that story so much! How great to have such a wonderful keepsake. Ok, we need to plan a playdate then. Your house to see all your cute projects. Or my place to let the kids get muddy :)
